Here is my music concrete project- Why Can't I Fantasize??
The phrase doesn't refer to being forbidden from fantasy, but to frustration resulting from the lost ability to fantasize.
This particular piece was saturated with technology, which I think can be a good modern avenue for music (concrete) to explore.
On this song I recorded myself in the process of recording the alarm clock radio in my room, switching stations. I also recorded myself playing guitar, a conversation with a friend over Skype involving the Talking Heads' song Thank You for Sending Me an Angel from Fear of Music. I also included 2 Beach Boys songs from (the 1971 album) Surf's Up. Looking At Tomorrow and Till I Die. I think Having Till I Die playing at the end worked well.
I also used some random other samples and sounds mostly from my computer. I'm pretty proud of the title Why Can't I Fantasize?? I kind of think overusing technology in a certain way can definitely hurt or weaken or scare off the imagination…yet I used both to make the track. Anyways I'm sure I've said enough about it as it is.
Honestly though, I have no clue what the piece "means"
making this piece was a process filled with intention and accidents. lots of improvising, lots of chopping up and moving. it was nearly all instinct for me. anyways, I'm one of those people that believes that the song itself is the meaning or message or whatever…most of my pieces for me have layers of meaning that unfold and become clear to me as time goes on, partially I'm sure due to the fact that I put many different ingredients in my musical meals. some tastes may clash…
