about

Hi
This is my contribution to the Negativland Tribute.

It was recorded in a single take and only cut to fit into the 433 format. No overdubs, no other alterations, it's straight from the recording device. I did not use my bass here.

To be honest I found myself struggling with the 433 limit and kept wondering how to create a track of exactly that length. So as I was standing at "Gürtel", a very busy street in Vienna, I decided to speak it as a mantra, using the sounds of the city as my orchestra. You can hear passers-by, the tube, some cars and other noises.
Negativland have been great with samples. I decided NOT to sample my voice here, but to allow for the intonation to change a little bit, and each "433" is a bit different from the others.
While Negativland have been very "American" my tribute is very Viennese because of my accent and the very noises of my beloved home town.

BIO/INFO

I am the Bassenger...and I ride and I ride...

An aging woman on stage, equipped with a mere bass guitar and a pretty nifty pedal board. And obviously she sings as well. Probably some generic hipster ballads or technically elaborate but boring jazz stuff.
Well, not really. The Bassenger is surprisingly diverse and intense.

She takes you on a trip to Noise, Ambient, Industrial, Singer-Songwriting, Blues, Gothic, Minimal and on that journey there are short, gritty ballads, soundscapes, stand-up comedy, walls of sound and yes, there is literature, too. And also her really weird deconstructions/ mashups of classics like...an Iggy Pop song for example.
But you never know what she’ll do next.
And most of the time her instrument doesn’t sound like a bass guitar either. It sounds...different. And during her performances she creates all of this right in front of you.
The Bassenger has been active since 2008, but she has been an artist for much longer.
She is also known as DJ Lady M who runs Totentanz, a small Viennese goth event series.
She is also the bass player of PHAL:ANGST. If you look closely, you will find the two dots of the bass key in both the Bassenger’s teapot logo and the band’s name.
Currently she is involved in quite a few jams, projects and collaborations.
Lately she has started a different approach to making music using field recordings and her voice.
