supporting material: “Most people mistakenly think that when they hear a piece of music, that they’re not doing anything, but that something is being done to them. Now this is not true, and we must arrange our music, we must arrange our art, we must arrange everything, I believe, so that people realize that they themselves are doing it, and not that something is being done to them ”
John Cage (1962)
Mediated Silence v0.01 aims to intention the act of non-passive listening, as does John Cage’s 4'33". I have made reference to the original by maintaining the three movements in correct timing. Sound objects is radio transmission artefact that has been processed minimally – just enough to remove any cultural association.
This piece should be played at minimal volume without focused listening. The noise of the media will blend with the noise of the listener’s ambient environment including the sonic output of one’s own activity. Notice how the diffused sounding and that of the world can often be indistinguishable thus creating an actioned auditory awareness that belongs only to that moment.
