The sound source for this track comes from a reel to reel recording that was made in late 1972 when I was aged 12 (and a half). I was recording myself on the family tape recorder- a Grundig 'Spinney' machine.
I was practising playing three chords based on Mick Ronson's guitar playing on Bowie's 'Hang On To Yourself' (well that's what was in my head at the time).
Over the decades, I had always been fascinated by these old tapes that were made and also many others I made with my older brother and sister and their friends.
In the early 1990s, I had access to a more advanced reel to reel and was able to slow many of these old recordings down and experiment with added effects etc.
I had later stored all these recordings which I had made and they are all just from these sequence of chords (played on a Watkins Rapier 33 guitar) and slowed down at various low speeds. At one point, the guitar sounds like a a couple of groaning Cellos and then ascends back up into the ether.
I originally made a long fifteen minute recording that was mastered onto a cassette tape in the early 90s.
For this track, I merged all the recordings together and mixed part of the 90s recording in together with some more reverb.
It just shows that three chords can go really far!.
