about

Statement: “From Matta’s Attic” explores an imagined acoustic space within a painting, “The Vertigo of Eros” (1947), a painting by the Chilean abstract expressionist, Roberto Matta. The audio work has been frozen in time since 1995, it was only recently rediscovered in a 4-track audio cassette recording, thought to have been lost in a small basement fire. The cassette was found in a box that survived the 1995 fire. This is the first release remastered for this project, Magnetic Tape themed 4'33" Musique Concrète.

Artist Statement/bio:
Stephen Bradley is a trans-disciplinary sonic/ media artist, tinkerer experimentalist who traces his relationship to place, humans and their communities, that includes surviving micro/macro lifeforms through field video and audio recordings, landscape photography, recorded stories that are often juxtaposed with artifacts discarded or lost within the complicated and compromised ecological landscape. Currently Bradley is a nomadic artist-in-residence in a split zip code community that collides with extreme south Baltimore City juxtaposed with south Anne Arundel County zip code boundary. Bradley collaborates with stakeholders involved in civic engagement, local micro-ecological sites mapping their similarities and differences whose communities also share deep historical systemic issues that continue today linked to industrialized spaces that compound the deep social and economic challenges that continue today.
