about

Initially I was looking at apps like ‘Photosounder, Virtual ANS and of course the Metasynth,’ some of these apps are open source and some commercial. Upon reflection I felt these apps were too Richard D and "Windowlicker" and not really in keeping with Daphne’s thinking.
Upon further searching I came across Iannis Xenakis, and his UPIC system (Unité Polyagogique Informatique CEMAMu) from 1977. Xenakis was a Greek-French avant-garde composer. Physically, the UPIC is a digitising tablet, computer based system, which has a vector display, where the user draws waveforms and volume envelopes on the tablet, which are then rendered by the computer. Once the waveforms are stored, the user can compose with them by drawing "compositions" on the tablet. A system not too dissimilar to what Daphne’s research was trying to achieve, albeit her approach was an electromechanical one.
The Iannis Xenakis Center (CIX), University of Rouen, France www.centre-iannis-xenakis.org, has developed a piece of software called ‘UPISketch’ downloadable from www.centre-iannis-xenakis.org/upisketch?lang=en this software allows the composer to produce graphical scores and draw the music
