Nijim feat. Nicolas Bonstein - Diary

about

The funny thing about „musique concréte“ is, that although some of the music i made around twenty years ago would count as such,
I was never really aware of it. i just wanted to experiment with sounds in the weirdest way possible.
With the first computer and some cheap programs and plug-ins, I was able to follow that vision and produce at least 4 full CDs with this under the moniker ‚Ernst Halft'.

Fast forward 20 years to a few weeks ago.
I was just looking at some czech jawharps with one letter more than BRUME in their brand-name when I found the call for this compilation.
Still a bit disappointed that the instrument wasn’t available in my favourite and desired key, I just flew over the text and didn’t think much of it.
I have never heard of the label or the founder. Or maybe the information was just stored somewhere in the back of my mind.

Since i am in a lot of noise-groups, this call popped up a few more times during the day and I finally took the time to listen to some Renou’s works and read the whole text, including the diary/cv.
i was amazed that there was a person that seemed to have had similar struggles with playing in bands and, above all, seemed to be eager to keep experimenting with sound.
Big resonance. Not only musically.

Immediately i could ‚hear‘ Christian Renou’s text being spoken. Of course with a french accent and so I applied for a „seat“ in this endeavour at Shaun Roberts of the IFAR Label
and tried to think of people who i could work with on the track.

There were only two friends I could ask. Cyril, who I worked with for 9 years, declined but Nicolas Bonstein, the founder of the „Les Digitales“ festivals in Switzerland, was immediately up for it.
I met these two guys ten years ago at one of the ‚Les Digitales‘ festival-branches in La Chaux-De-Fonds.
Nicolas recorded the text a few times for me while I took care of the percussions, guitars and organs for it. Instruments that came to mind in an instant while I read the text.
A few more effects here and there et boum!

I wanted it to sound old but modern. Crazy but structured. I wanted to be able to smell that hot summer in Paris.
And when you have a picture of Jim Morrison and a map of the „Pére Lechaise“ cemetary next to you while you record an organ track, there’s really not too much that could go wrong.

This is my tribute to Musique Concréte, Christian Renou and BRUME Records. I hope you enjoy!
