about

Boketto is the Japanese concept of staring blankly into the distance. However, it is not akin to spacing out, because it carries with it an element of contemplation. However, it may not also be fully considered meditation. It is less deliberate, but often may produce the same bio-chemical results.
The sounds in this piece are comprised of cicada in the Aokigahara Jukai, birds in the mountains overlooking Motosuko, both in Yamanashi, Japan; and Buddhist chanting and the morning bell at Zenkoji Temple in Nagano City. All sounds were recorded in August 2017.
They were then collaged into a series of crescendos, eventually culminating in a machine-like trance. The idea is to emulate the rhythms of fleeting thoughts when meditating on nature, with the eventual awareness of our own internal machine and our ability to slow its various processes. This ability is only one we can direct within, as nature directs its will on us, within it.
The visual piece is an untitled copper etching of cicada and tree branches done in May 2016. It is part of a larger series of etchings dealing with monochromatic shapes colored by rhythm.
