Not sure if it's an appropriate take on your initial idea of sound collage / montage, although that is how is was created.
I had originally considered trying to do a "Revolution No. 9"-ish montage, but that would've entailed me having to take some good LSD, which isn't really possible these days.0
The title "8th Cousin, 3 Times Removed" is referenced, because I am actually related to John Cage. My mum discovered it, via Ancestry .com a few years now. Kinda cool. Never met the guy.
