I used a 5-note Japanese scale. With it, I created a loop running at two different speeds (125 and 127 BPM). This, of course, is inspired by the work of Steve Reich. Over this sound background I added several licks using the same scale, these licks were played free, not following any of the two tempos of the background and were processed in several ways by a Yamaha FX900. Finally I found a Japanese voice in the public domain and I added it to the piece. Sometimes the voice is more clear, sometimes it gets lost in the background and between the licks, but I was not interested in using this as a “voice”. Rather than that I wanted to use it as part of the sonic texture. (In fact, I do not know what the voice is saying. I think it is poetry, but nothing more than that. The title of the piece “Kanashimi” means “Sadness” in Japanese. The photograph is a public domain image by S. Ogawa.
This is an outstanding collaboration, so far one of my favorite releases this year! BTW, be sure to check out Frank Beissel's own Bandcamp page, and his album Random Abstractions - so far, it's one of the best kept secrets of the year. mysticwolf75
