I grew up on Hollywood and Highland, in fact my entire family did. The intersections of two of the most important boulevards in Los Angeles, that has been there since the very start of the city of Hollywood, defines the centrality of the area and is steeped in history. Ghosts roam there; twenty-four hours a day.
I went to school there, went to the movies there, and walked the star-lined “Walk of Fame” in rain, heat, daylight and at night. There is of course a strong resonance. Today Hollywood and Highland is nothing like it was when I was in my teens. So much has changed. Much has been lost. However, the resonance, the memory and the depth of the place remains indelible in my consciousness.
This work, a kind of tribute to one way of thinking about Hollywood and Highland, is comprised of several sonic elements. Some of my friends’ mothers and fathers were projectionists in Hollywood; working in the numerous small movie houses dotting the boulevards and avenues of the heart of Hollywood. The composition pays homage to these folks, and is centrally based upon the sounds of the motion picture projector. Other sounds shape the context of the four-minute, thirty-three second duration of the composition including a handful of text clips from various motion picture figures. Somewhat incongruously the first line of Macbeth’s most important soliloquy is also included in the structure. Tribute to both MGM and also Twentieth-Century Fox appears in the famous lion roar and title logo associated with these iconic studios.
The composition was created in Nuendo and features resonance processing via 2C’s Kaleidoscope VST plug-in among other techniques. (rst)
